The short answer
Dial *#06#: if the screen shows an EID, your phone has an eSIM. It must also be unlocked, not tied to the carrier that sold it. iPhones bought in mainland China, Hong Kong or Macao mostly have no eSIM.

A working eSIM is not refunded because a phone cannot install it, so check your phone before you buy.
If your phone is not on the list
Dial *#06#. If the screen shows an EID, the phone has an eSIM. If it shows only IMEI numbers, it does not. The makers’ own lists, linked above, are the final word.
Carrier lock
A phone locked to the carrier that sold it will not use another eSIM. Ask your carrier to unlock it before you travel.
