eSIM or a SIM card for Egypt: which fits your trip
Both get you online in Egypt. They differ in where you buy them, what you show, and when they start working.
- No shop visit
- Passport needed for a SIM
- Data only eSIM

The short answer
An eSIM from this site installs at home and gets you online after landing, with no shop visit. A local SIM card from an Egyptian network needs a shop, your original passport and a document for your permitted stay, and it gives you an Egyptian number, which the eSIM does not.

When a local SIM card makes sense
A local line from Vodafone, Orange, e& or WE gives you an Egyptian number, and tourist bundles are sold in Egyptian pounds. You need your original passport and a document for your permitted stay, and the line is tied to that stay. At Hurghada airport the network shops in arrivals take cash only.
When the eSIM makes sense
The eSIM is on your phone before you board, so there is no shop and no queue after the flight. You switch it on after landing, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line, and your usual SIM stays in the phone for calls and bank codes.

Do I need an Egyptian number?
Only if you need to receive Egyptian calls or texts. The eSIM is data only; WhatsApp keeps your own number.
Is a phone with a foreign SIM taxed or registered in Egypt?
No. Egypt's phone registration rules let a tourist use a phone with a foreign SIM without fees, and give a 90-day exemption on each visit to a phone used with an Egyptian tourist SIM.
