The short answer

The UK says about a million British people visit Egypt each year and most visits are trouble-free. It calls the Red Sea tourist areas of southern Sinai generally low risk, advises against all travel to North Sinai and near the Libyan border, and warns that road accidents are common.

  • Red Sea resorts such as Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada and Marsa Alam: generally low risk.
  • North Sinai, and within 20 km of the Libyan border: advised against all travel.
  • Luxor, Aswan, Abu Simbel and the Valley of the Kings are excepted from the Western Desert warning.
  • Roads: accidents are common; book diving only with reputable operators.
